Dave Helmly, head of strategic development for Broadcast at Adobe®, has forged a distinguished career in video and imaging, helping professional creators nail their workflows.As a #DellInsideCircle member, Dave uses Dell Precision mobile workstations daily with his team of 15 international field representatives. We sat down with him to hear his thoughts on the role of technology in video and image editing, which technologies get him most excited, and how he expects the industry to evolve. Matt: What technology really excites you? Are there specific trends you are seeing?Dave: Our team’s daily job is more about being trusted advisors to our customers who are looking to spend their money wisely to create fast and solid edit stations. Most of my test projects are based on real-world work from customers looking to increase their output to post and deliver content faster. I use these projects to test workflows and ensure speed and stability for the work they need to do now – and in some cases the work they will need to do in the future.Technology like Intel’s Thunderbolt™ has been a game changer in our industry from fast backups to simplifying local RAID storage setups to faster networking for laptops. Other technology like VR 360 video was discovered early on and became a feature set in our products. Usage of VR has shifted from being a consumer visual walkthrough tool to a professional one. AI technologies, like our own Adobe Sensei™, are advancing at lightning speed every month. We are working on some very cool AI tech for video creators. Check out the sneak peek of Project FastMask from Adobe MAX a few years ago: It’s available now in beta in After Effects® as Roto Brush 2.The majority of my day-to-day customers are leaders in the US media and broadcast space. I also work with Hollywood editors, well known YouTubers, and leading film schools. The biggest trend and number one topic on any given day since the pandemic hit is remote editing. I see HDR and 10-bit displays becoming the norm the same way HD video took over a few years ago. Nearly all of my customers have stated that delivering HDR content is a top priority for them and they need the right tools and workflows to ensure they can update their supply chains with HDR content. As a result, you’ll see more enhanced and simpler HDR video workflows from us. Matt: As a #DellInsideCircle member, you recently tried out the Precision 5750 mobile workstation. What were your first impressions? Dave: The design is sleek, slim, and lightweight. It’s hard to believe it’s a 17-inch because it fits into my 15-inch laptop case with ease. It’s a powerhouse; I was also able to run several test projects in Adobe Premiere® Pro with 4K edits and 8K edits. I was using a Dell 5530 2-in-1, and I still love that machine, but there’s no question that this one is much faster. I would recommend it to any peers in my field.Dave Helmly working on Adobe Creative Cloud with a Dell Precision workstation in his studioMatt: If you had $5,000 to build an at-home editing studio, what would you invest in? Dave: If I were to advise someone on what to consider within their budget, other than your workstation and Adobe Creative Cloud®, I’d suggest a standup desk that adjusts up and down, a high-end webcam like a Sony or Canon DSLR for web meetings – as a video editor, your image is everything, an Ultrawide HDR Display, and Thunderbolt 3 raid for local projects.If you have another $5,000, then definitely upgrade to the main editing hardware. Newer technologies like NVMe drives, NVIDIA RTX GPUs, and 10th Gen Intel® Core™ or Xeon® processors would benefit any workflow.Matt: You have been in the industry for over 35 years and with Adobe for almost 25 years. What key technologies have been industry gamechangers?Dave: Both Photoshop® and Premiere have been around for 30 years and have created the imaging and video standards that the industry has been built around. Many of the advancements we see around digital cameras, HDR displays, compute power, drive access and speeds, drive capacity, and real-time GPU effects are a direct result of the need to create faster and do work that stands out from the crowd. You see this every day on YouTube where successful creators deliver high quality videos that have now reached 8K frame size and playback. They are setting the pace for what you’ll see from broadcasters. Matt: Any predictions for the industry?Dave: Overall, remote editing has been quite successful for most customers but the lack of face-to-face meetings in the office has made working as a team more difficult. The number one thing I hear customers wish for is better collaboration tools for remote team editing so that multiple people can simultaneously edit or review the same project. I believe cloud-based workflows will become the norm for film and broadcast editing. It will happen fast, within two to three years. Cloud-based rendering and delivery will shorten the time to the supply chain and bring overall costs down as the cost of cloud compute equals out. We will still require high-end local workstations as the risk of moving to the cloud 100% for compute is too high. Currently, it’s more about having a seamless connection to the cloud. Matt: Who are your favorite creators to follow on social media and who should we watch out for?Dave: The first one that comes to mind is Devin Graham (Devin Supertramp). I met him early on in his career and introduced him to RED Camera several years ago. As a result, I’m a better RED shooter myself. Devin always shares his workflow on his Behind-the-Scenes channel and answers questions on shooting techniques and which lens to use. Peter Hollens is another one to watch. He has a fresh look to his edits that just pull you into his world. On the tech side – it’s hard to match Linus Tech Tips. I have a lot of respect for him and his team’s passion for advancements in technology. He can be brutal to software companies like ours, but he drives us to do better in terms of performance and stability. Matt: What’s your most prized possession?Dave: This one is easy. It’s relationships with like-minded people. Engaging in tech conversations with customers, peers, and friends make Mondays okay.

The reaction to a poorly-translated Chinese word sets off a firestorm of anti-creation protest among scientists.Early Victorian scientists (and their predecessors) would have had no qualms about references to a Creator in scientific writings. That was then. Now, “Creator” is fightin’ words. Pro-evolution bigots react to it like Code Pink at a traditional-marriage rally, screaming, disrupting, and threatening anyone who mentions the C-word in a scientific context, even inadvertently. Evolution skeptics, consigned to their own tents outside the walls of the Science Castle where Darwin is enshrined like a god (2/01/07 commentary), may only utter the C-word in their own dwellings. There is no malfeasance more likely to get one Expelled out of secular science than to appear to give aid and comfort to the enemies of naturalism, the consensus worldview inside the castle where no divine foot can get in the door.The open access journal PLoS One learned this all to well when Chinese researchers wrote the deplorable word in a paper, even though they are evolutionists. In a paper exploring the capabilities of the human hand, they wrote:The explicit functional link indicates that the biomechanical characteristic of tendinous connective architecture between muscles and articulations is the proper design by the Creator to perform a multitude of daily tasks in a comfortable way.Hand coordination should indicate the mystery of the Creator’s invention.In conclusion, our study can improve the understanding of the human hand and confirm that the mechanical architecture is the proper design by the Creator for dexterous performance of numerous functions following the evolutionary remodeling of the ancestral hand for millions of years.Yikes! Three times they wrote the C-word. Their references to “design” were bad enough, but “Creator”? That was beyond the red line. Evolutionists went nuts, flooding the comments with calls for retraction, calling the references “shameful” and “nonscientific” and “extremely distressing” and “an embarrasment.” One said that “retraction should be just the first step” in the journal’s punishment; others said “PLoS One is now a joke… an absolute joke of a journal.” At Evolution News & Views, David Klinghoffer likened the protestors to a mob with pitchforks. Nature got out in front to join the condemnation while trying to bring some order to the situation. Retraction Watch put the paper up on their watch list and was soon flooded with dozens of comments. Readers can only imagine what PZ Myers said about it without our having to quote him; this is a family-friendly website, after all.One of the authors, pledging allegiance to Darwin, attributed the mistake to a translation error, saying that the word translated from Chinese into “Creator” actually meant something like “nature.” After all, didn’t they acknowledge “evolutionary remodeling of the ancestral hand for millions of years”? It was too little too late. The holy war was on again (2/19/09).The editors at PLoS One, seeing the firestorm, said they would look into the situation. Soon after, they caved. They issued the following retraction for having sinned by uttering “inappropriate language”—Following publication, readers raised concerns about language in the article that makes references to a ‘Creator’, and about the overall rationale and findings of the study.Upon receiving these concerns, the PLOS ONE editors have carried out an evaluation of the manuscript and the pre-publication process, and they sought further advice on the work from experts in the editorial board. This evaluation confirmed concerns with the scientific rationale, presentation and language, which were not adequately addressed during peer review.Consequently, the PLOS ONE editors consider that the work cannot be relied upon and retract this publication.The editors apologize to readers for the inappropriate language in the article and the errors during the evaluation process.(See Evolution News & Views response.)Not all of the critics were beside themselves over the “Creatorgate” scandal. One “committed atheist” made the following comment to the Nature report:…I find such comments as “Hand coordination should indicate the mystery of the Creator’s invention.” to be naive rather than horrifying, or a reason to withdraw the paper. Seriously: was the data OK? If it was – no problem; ask them to consider removing mention of a “Creator”. Were the conclusions warped to include influence of a deity? If so – ask them to reword / rethink. But to pull the paper?? That smacks of post hoc closing of stable doors…. A little more tolerance, people: I have seen Indian scientists in the ICGEB in Delhi make offerings to the highly impressive statue of Ganesha, the elephant-headed deity, in the Institute courtyard – and no-one thinks their science is shoddy.Another wrote to Retraction Watch, “Where has tolerance and respect for the beliefs and opinions of others gone? One doesn’t need to agree, but bringing in a different idea in a civil manner seems more appropriate for an academic discussion.” Doug Bolton at the UK Independent found a little hypocrisy in the intolerance by academics. Such calls for tolerance, however, were drowned out by the vociferous calls to punish the journal for their indiscretion in letting the C-word slip through.Theistic evolutionists shouldn’t kid themselves into thinking they’re safe by putting the Creator into a front-loading position, letting Darwinian evolution do the rest of the creating. At best, they will be given one less lashing.So, all you leftist liberal Darwinian materialists, are you proud of yourselves? Remember in 1874 when your Darwin disciple John Tyndall pled with the British Association to be tolerant of materialist explanations? Now you are the bigots. You cannot have a rational discussion about evidence, even when the science is good. And the hand is a great example of intelligent design inexplicable by blind, unguided processes (see medical doctor Randy Guliuzza’s article on ICR). No matter. Darwin Sharia demands lex talionis: a hand for a hand.So think about this: according to your own evolutionary theory, this is not about facts, evidence or logic at all. It’s an evolutionary game. Your own materialist brethren view the evolution of altruism as an emergent phenomenon involving cooperators and cheaters (see recent example in Science Advances). You were once the cheaters; now you are the cooperators punishing the cheaters. Accordingly, your position is about power, not truth, and it can oscillate back and forth. If you want your position to be true, you have to find a source for Truth that doesn’t evolve. In other words, you have to believe in a truthful, reliable Creator. With your materialism thus self-refuted, your best option is to abandon materialism and become a creationist—if you can avoid hating yourself. Q.E.D.Exercise: Download the paper while you can (it may be come a collector’s item). Read it with a focus on the data. Does the evidence support design? Do the authors provide any plausible evidence for emergence of the hand by unguided processes of mutation and selection? The World Economic Forum (WEF) has been held for over 40 years, with Africa’s involvement and its interests at the heart of a dedicated annual continental forum since 1990. Here are some of the highlights from those 26 years in preparation for the forthcoming WEF on Africa to be held in Rwanda in May 2016.1990 and 1991WEF’s first Africa meeting took place in Geneva, Switzerland in 1990, featuring participants from business, government and civil society, including many burgeoning economy policymakers and business leaders from South Africa.The priority was to gain international support for South Africa’s future, as a united front featuring both Thabo Mbeki, chief economic policy maker for the African National Congress (ANC), and the National Party government’s finance minister Barend du Plessis. They took the findings of the forum on a roadshow through Africa and major international financial centres to drum up support for a smooth economic transition to a democratic South Africa.The following year, the forum held again in Geneva, took a more pointed focus on the rest of Southern Africa, with the theme “Opportunities for Growth and Development in a Southern Africa in Transition”.1992Then South African President FW de Klerk, Nelson Mandela and Chief Mangosuthu Buthelezi, the three primary players in political and economic negotiations in South Africa, presented a united front at the 1992 WEF Annual Meeting in Davos, Switzerland. It re- evaluated global changes, such as the 2008 economic downturn, and its effects on African economies.2011The Grow Africa initiative, co-founded by the African Union Commission, Nepad and the WEF, was the hallmark of the 2011 Africa event, held in Cape Town. It focused on an African-owned, country-led, market-based and an inclusive approach to accelerating investment in sustainable growth with an emphasis on agriculture.2015The 25th World Economic Forum on Africa was held in Cape Town with the theme “Then and Now: Reimagining Africa’s Future”.With over 1 250 participants from business, politics, civil society, academia and the media, the forum was the largest WEF event ever held in Africa due to an increased number of female participants and young, economic minds from the continent.The milestone was seen as an indication of the unprecedented levels of commitment by global private-public economies to achieving Africa’s transformation. A continuing investment of over $10-billion (about R151-billion) in the Grow Africa initiative saw the creation of almost 60 000 agriculture jobs in 12 countries.Over 8-million smallholder farmers received assistance from the programme.
